NYConnect Career Day Equips Rensselaer Lally School Graduate Students with Strong Career Perspectives
Last month, the Rensselaer Club of New York (RCNY) and the Rensselaer Lally School Graduate Management Student Association (GMSA) held its 2012 NYConnect Career Day. During this one-day program, Lally School MBA and M.S. degree candidates traveled to New York City for job shadow experiences, a panel discussion, and a networking event at the Cornell Club.
As part of the day, Rensselaer alumni/ae hosts invite Lally graduate students to participate in client and staff meetings, engage in panel discussions with other corporate professionals, and observe a typical job day in a particular industry.
“This event helps Lally School MBA and M.S. students build strong career outlooks through networking, job shadowing, skill-building, and input from current business professionals,” said Tom Begley, dean of the Rensselaer Lally School.
Previous alumni/ae hosts have worked at Barclays Capital, Bank of New York – Mellon, Cap Gemini, Madison Square Garden, Deloitte Consultants, Credit Suisse, TV Guide, Goldman Sachs, and Moody’s.
The day provides an extraordinary opportunity for students to connect to and network with senior level professionals and executives, a chance to learn about an industry or field through guided experience by alumni/ae, and a realistic view of business culture at both the corporate and industry level.
Each year this event continues to be very successful and enjoyed by Lally School MBA and M.S. degree candidates. A few of the Lally students shared their feedback on the 2012 NYConnect Career Day:
“NYConnect really helped me gain an insider perspective into the start-up world. The amount of information I was able to gain from the event far exceeded my expectations, and provided me with experience that can’t be replicated in the classroom.” - Virginia Lai ’14 MBA
“At my job shadow experience at Morgan Stanley, I learned that even for analysts basic technical tools are necessary to evaluate and design investment portfolios. Thanks to this event, with the high platform and broad vision it provided, it gave me lots of motivation and courage to improve myself.” - Ke Su ’14 MBA
“The pace of work at Barclays Capital was very fast and very efficient. I was able to get a better understanding of the business analyst profession. Overall, my visit was energizing and extremely enlightening.” - Jose Hanchi ’13 MBA
