Nishtha Langer is an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics at the Lally School of Management, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She teaches graduate and undergraduate students on aligning the firms' IT strategy and business strategies for sustained competitive advantage, exploring new markets, and enabling grounded management and economic principles through the use of technology.
Professor Langer's research looks at the productivity and organizational imperatives of human capital investments for knowledge workers, the business value of IT, and the disparate goals faced by IT organizations in strategic IT outsourcing. Her research benefits from her rigorous academic training at Carnegie Mellon University combined with over 5 years of IT experience in India and USA. She is interested in empirically analyzing how firms can use their IT and human assets most effectively. She has partnered with leading Indian IT service providers to research on optimum allocation of project managers to outsourcing projects. She has also investigated the return on training investments for human capital. She has applied econometric modeling and simulation techniques to evaluate the challenges and value of RFID and eCommerce. Last but not least, her research examines the dynamics of strategic IT outsourcing industry that requires vendors and clients to manage the dichotomous goals of satisfaction and financial performance.
Her research has been forthcoming or published at top tier journals, including Management Science, Information Systems Research (ISR), MIS Quarterly, amongst others, and widely presented and acclaimed by both academic and industry audience. More recently, her paper on Project Managers’ Practical Intelligence was the runner up for the best-published paper at ISR in 2014. She has been associate editor and program committee member for prestigious conferences and workshops such as International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS), Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE), INFORMS Conference on Information Systems and Technology (CIST), and Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS).
Before joining RPI, Dr. Langer was an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. She was also a visiting faculty at the College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In a prior life, she worked as a Systems Analyst at Arbella Insurance, Boston, MA and as a Systems Engineer at Tata Infotech Ltd., India (now part of Tata Consultancy Services). She holds a Bachelor in Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Management (with specialization in Information Systems) from the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University.
